Please let me know if I can help in any way with a UTM WorldKit?. One possibility, to get around the problem of validating two different sorts of input data, is to have 2 WorldKits?: one for lat/long, one for UTM.

FYI, my map image in config.xml is defined as

<north>5630000</north> <south>5150000</south> <east>660000</east> <west>200000</west>

Tasmania fits more or less neatly into UTM block 55G, and we use both a false easting and a false northing in our grid coordinates. For more info, please see my spatial data basics site (third site in signature below).
